Custom Explosion Proof Enclosure for Volvo Penta Control Interface – Zone 2 Ready
12 June 2025
We’re proud to showcase a recent collaboration between Pyroban and Ex-tech Solution that led to the final customisation of a rugged enclosure from our DE8BA range – expertly tailored for offshore hazardous environments.
This robust Ex d enclosure was engineered to house the Control Interface Module for Volvo Penta, enabling direct actuation from the exterior. It’s fully optimised for Zone 2 hazardous areas, making it ideal for demanding oil and gas and marine energy applications.
Built for Offshore Safety
This is a Category 3G diesel engine controller, purpose-built for offshore energy operations in the Southern North Sea. The enclosure integrates trusted Ex d components from both Pyroban and Ex-tech Solution, ensuring full compliance with ATEX standards for explosion protection.
Explosion proofing the central brain of the engine system
In Zone 2 hazardous areas, even Category 3G diesel engines require precise control and monitoring to ensure safe and efficient operation. The Volvo Penta Control Interface Module housed within this enclosure serves as the central brain of the engine system. It manages key functions such as engine start/stop, throttle control, fault diagnostics, and emergency shutdown, all while maintaining compliance with ATEX safety requirements within the customised explosion proof enclosure.
By enabling direct actuation from outside the enclosure, operators can interact with the system without compromising the integrity of the explosion-proof barrier, an essential feature for offshore oil and gas environments where downtime and safety risks must be minimised.
Customised ATEX Enclosure Specification
The DE8BA322 enclosure is a rugged, explosion-proof solution designed for hazardous environments, certified for use in Gas and Dust Zones 1, 21, 2, and 22 under ATEX and IECEx standards. It carries the Ex markings Ex db IIB T6 Gb and Ex tb IIIC T85°C Db, with an ingress protection rating of IP65, ensuring durability against dust and water ingress.
Engineered to operate within a temperature range of –20°C to +60°C, the enclosure is constructed from cast iron and finished with a high-performance offshore-grade coating, with colour customisation available to meet client specifications. The enclosure features a glass window, allowing operators to view screen data.
Offshore Safety with Explosion Proof solutions
In hazardous environments, safety and reliability are non-negotiable. This project demonstrates how tailored engineering and certified components can deliver high-performance solutions for critical marine and offshore applications.
